Message to whom it may be of interest: Scots-Dutch-EU History Project

Im Auftrag von Daniel J J Sutherland veröffentlichen wir folgenden Aufruf zum akademischen Austausch:

MILITARY SUTHERLAND CLANSMEN IN THE DUTCH REPUBLIC, 1572-1782‚ is based on academic research and unique archival collection, inventory being prepared, research enquiries welcomed, archival help needed. This concerns the Scottish diaspora abroad, Scots origin and dispersal of military migrants. Soldiers from Sutherland, earldom and clan domain, N-E Scotland – raised for mercenary military service abroad – were enlisted by the landed military clan elite for armed service by Scots Highland regiments in continental Europe. Commissioned throughout Europe, they reinforced mercenary armies of France, Germany, Russia, Sweden and the Low Countries. They served in Scots Brigade regiments (1572-1782) when Scots-Dutch regiments reinforced the Staatse Leger, the army of the Dutch Republic. The Netherlands were facing repeated conflicts of armed invasion. Privately raised by their own clan chiefs and landlords acting both as warlords and army officers, Scots were deployed to fight for their economic survival and for defence of the Republic during frequent European wars (16th-18th C). Questions arise. How many arrived in the Republic after previous armed service elsewhere in continental Europe? Why and what was their identity? Which military Sutherland clansmen served Gustavus Adolphus and Louis XIV during the Thirty Years‘ War (1618-48)? Did George II of Hanover and Great Britain deploy Scots-Dutch soldiers during the Seven Years‘ War (1756-63)?

Comment or enquiry in Dutch, English, French, German language appreciated.
